In October 2012, the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency DARPA initiated a three year Disaster Robotics Challenge (DRC) designed to move humanoid robots out of the lab and into the field to assist in roles like disaster relief. The Challenge would culminate in 2015 with 24 teams from around the world competing in a live event. It has been over 10 years since the start of the DRC and while other competitions including the ANA Avatar XPRIZE (2022) and the DARPA Subterranean Challenge (2021) have advanced the technologies, a robust humanoid still does not exist.
The workshop will review what was learned during those competitions and since by both the organizers and the participants and ask the question of how do we move forward as a community? The presentations and panels will discuss important lessons from prior work and highlight the key barriers to advancing robust human capable robots. The intent is to identify areas that both researchers and sponsor agencies see as technical roadblocks and build a framework for pursuing further research.
